Closing Ceremonies at Pine Tree

Many awards are earned at Regional competitions (see the list here).

NRG was the recipient of the Entrepreneurship Award At the Pine Tree Regional this weekend. NRG cheered on the rookie teams who won the Rookie All Star and the Highest Seed/Ranked Rookie Award. NRG received these awards at two competitions in our rookie year last year and it gave us goosebumps to watch other new teams

At the Pine Tree Regional, NRG received the Entrepreneurship Award! And… Eli Wootton, NRG’s president, received one of the two prestigious Dean’s List Awards!

Go Gearheads!!!

There will be a closing ceremony later this afternoon and more awards to be announced. Our students nominated two of our students for the Dean’s List Award. Two deserving young men, Eli and Nate, are in the running with students from 37 other teams!

Four Matches This Morning

NRG has 4 qualifying matches this morning (Saturday, April 6).

Apr 05 2013

What a day at the Pine Tree Regional!

Today was the first day of qualifying matches. Similar to our experience in Hartford, we had a difficult start, riddled with problems to solve, and were ranked in the bottom 5. Through the day, the students rallied and worked on the bot and strategy. We rose through the ranks up to SIXTH at one point, but settled in at 12th at the end of today. That was terrific and well-noticed. But that wasn’t all! The team won the prestigious Entrepreneurship Award!!! The announcer spoke about the judges comments, one of which was that it is very rare that this award goes to such a young team. I am so very proud of these students! Tomorrow brings the last of the qualifying rounds and the playoffs. Go Gearheads!

Hartford CT Regional Competition Field Trip

(click title to see whole message)

You should have been emailed a letter and forms for the Hartford Connecticut Regional Competition Field Trip. If you need another copy, please check in the “forms” area of our site or ask Ms. Vincent. All forms are due before the end of the school day on March 20th. Please check the regulations for eligibility to attend competitions. You must have a passing average and have attended at least 70% of team meetings. We have missed many of our members during the busy build season. We’ve put more hours in during the build season than we have for the rest of the year. If you have not been an active member, we still want you to attend and experience the regional competition to support the team. It is a BLAST! You will, however, have to have the same requirement of passing average grade to attend on Thursday and pay $10 per day to ride the bus. We would LOVE to have as many people as possible join us on Friday and Saturday when we do not have school. Invite everyone! There is room on the bus on a first-come, first-served basis for the same $10 per day fee and paperwork completed and handed in by the end of the school day March 20th. GO GEARHEADS!

Icy Conditions, Monday, Feb 11

Hello Gearheads! We are still opening the lab at noon today, Monday the 11th! Dr. Palmer and I just spoke. Mr. Boyle and the crews have cleared a way for us to get in, but it is VERY slick! Students must be driven in by their parent or guardian to the back door. Parking is only allowed at the back along the guard rails. It is very icy up on the hill. Parents and mentors, PLEASE drive very slowly. Everyone, please walk with caution and enter carefully as your wet feet will be slick inside on the floor as well. Call or text me to be let in.

Be safe!

Feb 10 2013

The crews are working diligently on clearing the school’s drive ways and lots… and we are going to get hit more more bad weather tomorrow morning! Dr. Palmer understands how important it is that we get in the building even though the school may be officially closed. She has made arrangements so we will have parking along the back guardrail tomorrow during the day and into the night (after the surfaces are cleared and treated for freezing conditions). CHECK WITH YOUR MENTOR to see what time after noon you should arrive to work with him/her. I will be there at noon through until the last one of us has a ride home.
Be sure to have eaten a good breakfast and early lunch. We hope that our supportive parent group will provide a dinner.
Plan on a good long productive day and afternoon!

Parent Support Request

Karen Cook wanted to send you, the parents of NRG 4055, the following message regarding the meal sign up. This is a follow-up message to ask for your continued support of our kids and their mentors as they work hard towards their goal…a Championship robot! Thank you to all who have contributed so far. I know the snacks and lunches are greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, we have lots of open spaces when we need parents to step up. Please consider what you can provide and sign up. If you know of a business that may be willing to donate a catered lunch or snack, that works too! I’ve added the next two Sundays for lunch because they will now be meeting those days too. Keep an eye on the team website for any meeting changes due to weather. If you know of anyone who might be missing our emails, please let me know. Because response has been sparse, I’m thinking I do not have every parents contact email. Pass the word and encourage your kids to keep you updated. To view the sign up, go to:

Recently, the FIRST Robotics Gearheads Team 4055 received a CNC Machine donated by Wittmann Robotics. The CNC Machine, which stands for Computerized Numerical Control, cuts materials including wood, metal, plastic, and foam. The machine can be programmed to cut specific parts for a robot from a design created by a member of NRG. The Gearheads are excited for this addition to their workshop, and are delighted that the CNC Machine will soon be available for use. NRG would like to extend a huge thank you to Wittmann Robotics for their generosity!

The Gearheads are currently over half way through build season, and have been given the difficult task of building a robot capable of throwing a Frisbee as well as climbing a pyramid. Now, in addition to creating this robot, the Gearheads are attempting to cover the costs of the delivery and set-up for the machine. The Gearheads are reaching out to the community to help cover these costs, which amount to approximately $1500. The team is very excited to begin using the CNC Machine, and any donations to help cover this cost would allow the team to begin using the machine and would be greatly appreciated. Please contact NRG 4055 if you are interested in making a donation.

Fw: Welcome to PIne Tree

Welcome to the Pine Tree Regional FIRST Robotics Competition! On behalf of the entire planning committee, we would like to thank you for registering for this inaugural Maine event! We are so excited to have so many teams supporting us in this amazing endeavor. We are so proud you all will be coming to Maine, and we are definitely getting very excited to finally be able to tell our FIRST story to our own communities. This is an incredible opportunity for us as FRC teams, and we are very humbled to be sharing it with some of the best FRC teams out there. We have a few quick updates and information to share with you as you prepare for your trip to Maine! 1. Weather: The most important thing to remember about Maine is that the weather can be pretty unpredictable. Like most of New England, it can be beautiful and 65 one day, and frigid and 20 the next. April is one of the most unpredictable months we experience, as it is our transition to Spring, so please be prepared for anything. Layers are definitely the answer! Rain gear is definitely recommended! 2. Hotels: If you havent booked your hotel and your team is going to need them, it is imperative that you work on this very quickly. The hotels filled much more quickly than we anticipated. There are still options left, but please make reservations quickly! 3. Parking: There is plenty of FREE parking at the event. Busses will be no problem. 4. Volunteers: We are STILL looking for some wonderful volunteers! If you have parents or adults travelling with you, PLEASE ask them to sign up to volunteer for the event through VIMS! We have some AWESOME key volunteers already booked, and this promises to be one of the BEST Regional Competitions in FRC! 5. Food: The prices of the food in the arena have been set! There are plenty of choices for meals and snacks, so be sure to check out the prices on our website! We are asking that food NOT be brought into the arena, although there will not be any checkpoints to sneak through. We are asking everyone to be graciously professional at all times, and remember that supporting our venue with your food purchases means we will be welcome back to this location for many years. You can see the full menu on our website under the Concession Menu! If anyone has questions about this, please dont hesitate to ask! 6. VIP Invitations: If you have a member of your community who is an educator, an administrator, or a business representative, that your team would like to invite to this exciting event, please send their contact information to and we will send them a VIP invitation from the Pine Tree Regional Committee. We will do our best to show them all the excitement of a FIRST event, as well as let them know how important it is to your team for them to be involved. This is an excellent way to sell your team to your school and town. 7. Social Media: The BEST way to keep up with what we are working on here at Pine Tree is keep up with us on the Social Media scene! Website: Facebook: Twitter: @PinetreeR 8. Robot Load In: Robot Load In times will be Wednesday night (April 3) from 6pm to 8pm as well as Thursday morning starting at 7:45am. Please remember this is for 5 teams members ONLY (4 team members and 1 adult), and that teams are expected to enter the pit area, drop off material, and exit as quickly as possible. PLEASE dont set up your pit, put up banners, etc. This is not the appropriate time for those activities. If these two times dont work for your team, please contact us at, so we can make other arrangements, if possible. Okay, thats all from the planning committee for now. Again, we are SO excited that you all are coming to Maine, and we welcome you with open arms! This game is a REAL challenge, so we are definitely looking forward to seeing all the awesome solutions that you created! Our website is a GREAT place to get information if you have any questions, but please feel free to email us with any questions as well! Good luck with your build season and we will see you all in April! The Pine Tree Regional Planning Committee

CNC Machines

CNC Machines Donated by Wittmann Robotics On Friday, 4 January 2013, the Gearheads received a CNC Machine donated by Wittmann Robotics. The CNC Machine, which stands for Computerized Numerical Control, cuts materials including wood, metal, plastic, and foam. The machine can be programmed to cut specific parts for a robot from a design created by a member of NRG. The Gearheads are excited for this addition to their workshop, and delighted that the CNC Machine came just in time for build season. NRG would like to extend a huge thank you to Wittmann Robotics for their generosity!

Build Season!

Saturday, 5 January marked the start of the 2013 FIRST Robotics build season. FIRST, which stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an international organization which encourages students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This year’scompetition, Ultimate Ascent, will challenge students to build a robot capable of throwing a Frisbee as well as climbing a pyramid. The beginning of build season marks a six week period where students will design, program, build, and electrically wire a robot that meets the requirements of FIRST’s challenge.

FIRST Robotics team 4055, located at Northwestern Regional 7, is looking forward to the challenge Ultimate Ascent will provide. Lead mentor, Stephen Goyette, is excited for the skills and experience his students will acquire from this competition. “I am looking forward to the experience the Gearheads will obtain from competing during their second year. The team will test the skills they have acquired from their rookie year, and I am confident they will build an exemplary robot of a high caliber.” During their rookie year, the Gearheads received the Rookie All Star award, securing them a spot in the international championships in St. Louis, Missouri. The Gearheads will first compete in the Hartford, Connecticut Regional Competition, and hope to make it to the championship. Good luck NRG!

Schoolwork before robotics! It is everyone’s responsibility to keep up to date with school work and do his/her school work with quality effort. Whether you are going home after school or staying through until we meet, PLEASE take care of your school responsibilities before attending robotics. For those of you who do stay through, the cafeteria is open for you after school. USE IT. Room 009 will be open about an hour before robotics begins (after the cafe closes) on Mondays and Wednesdays, EXCEPT Monday, February 18, during the build season.

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities” – Stephen R. Covey

Wittman Robotics factory

n Friday, 2 November 2012, NRG visited the Wittman Robotics factory in Torrington, Connecticut. The Gearheads were invited to the factory to give a demonstration using their robot, and to tour the facilities. President Eli Wootton lead the demonstration with a speech explaining NRG’s accomplishments during their rookie year, while Josh Smith and Erick Bailey gave an interactive demonstration to workers at Wittman. The Gearheads then toured Wittman, and were able to observe the amazing robots they had created.
Wittman Robotics creates machines which are designed to mass produce plastic parts. The engineers at Wittman are able to design machines capable of creating any plastic product a client could ask for, and workers at Wittman are then able to create these machines, and programmers program them to do exactly what the client needs. The machine then runs continuously for seventy-two hours to discover any issues the machine may have. The product is then shipped to the customer and a programmer will arrive to set up the robot at its destination.
NRG would like to thank Wittman for the amazing opportunity they offered us when they extended the invitation to visit. It was a fantastic opportunity and each member of the team walked away having learned more about robotics. Thank you Wittman!

Bash at the Beach

On Saturday, 29 September 2012, the FIRST Northwest Robotics Gearheads competed in the fourteenth annual Bash At the Beach competition hosted by the following FIRST teams: the 236 Techno Ticks, the 2168 Fitch Falcons, the 1699 Bacon Academy Robocats, the 1740 Ledyard High School Colonels and the 2067 Apple Pi. This beach themed party was based on the 2012 FIRST robotics competition, The Rebound Rumble, and was located at the Old Lyme middle school. Driven by Shane Cyr and Eli Wootten, the NRG Robot wowed the competition by finishing second overall in qualifying matches– not bad for rookies! The team then played their way to the semi-finals where they finished third out of twenty-four completing teams from Connecticut and Massachusetts. NRG received the K.I.S.S. Award for “Keeping it Simple and Stable” with the robot’s reliable design and stability. Congratulations Gearheads!
